An opera seria composed by Rossini in 1823 based on Voltaire's tragedy "Semiramis," it was the last work of Rossini's Italian period. Set in ancient Babylonia, Rossini's epic opera "Semiramide" depicts the fate of a queen who is complicit in the murder of her husband. Semiramide, queen of ancient Babylonia, was seduced by the Assyrian prince Assur and took part in the murder of her husband, King Nino. Ninia, her son with Nino, has been missing since Nino's death. Fifteen years after the king's death, Semillermide is faced with the necessity of choosing a successor, and she tries to have Arsace, a young warlord, take over the throne as her husband. However, he is the missing son Ninia....... This is a dramatic melodrama. In all modern revivals and reenactments over the past 50 years, parts of the opera have been deleted or ignored in favor of Rossini's original performance techniques, and the opera is now being presented on the Opera Lara label, a new, more intimate version of the opera. This recording by the Opera Lara label is the first complete recording of the complete work, with period instruments and a dramatic performance that is at the same time historically accurate. It was done in a studio session recording, which is rare these days, and as a perfect one, it is a fitting album for the 150th anniversary of Rossini's death.Includes many color photos of rehearsals and recordings, lyrics (original Italian, English bilingual only), 120-page booklet Warner Music Japan
