Recorded: Studio recording for broadcast at DRS Studio M3, Basel, December 21, 1965 (mono) Aline Van Balenzen (1897-1981) was a French pianist of American origin. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, she gave her first concert at the age of four.At an early age, his mother took him to Paris, where he received his formal musical education, played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 at the age of 7, entered the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of 9, and won first prize in the piano competition of the Conservatoire de Paris in 1909 at only 11, a record that still stands today as the youngest ever. He then studied with Heinrich Barthes and Ernst von Dohnányi in Berlin, where he also met the young Artur Rubinstein and Wilhelm Kempff. In 1914, he also studied once in Vienna with Theodor Reshetitsky in his later years, and showed great promise for the future. He eventually settled in Paris, where he was surrounded by the most prominent performers and composers of the time. She performed works by Enesco, Poulenc, Messiaen, Roussel, Villa-Lobos, etc. On May 14, 1939, she renounced her American citizenship and became a French citizen. 1954, she was appointed professor of piano at the Paris Conservatory, a position she held until 1967. This set contains almost all of her recordings for broadcast, and is an invaluable overview of a little-known master of the 20th century. (Tobu Shoji)
