TORTOISE is a super-instrumental rock band from Chicago that refines dense and structured ensembles. The band is a unique group that combines the hardness of post-punk with a jazz-like fluidity. The group has been a leader and representative of the post-rock scene, and this memorable first album from 1994 echoes the independent soil of THRILL JOCKEY, the experimentation of the American Midwest, and the DIY spirit of the early 1990s. TORTOISE pioneered the studio in terms of using the recording process as a songwriting tool or sixth member. In addition to their punk and new wave roots, TORTOISE incorporates a variety of musical styles and influences such as German rock, minimalism, dub, trip-hop, film music, and country, and combines them into a completely different sound. Because of their uniqueness, after the release of this album, they will be considered leaders of a new musical movement. The deep bouncing bass swirls on "MAGNET PULLS THROUGH," the fine ticking of the drums supports the reverberating guitar on "SPIDERWEBBED," metallic percussion tightens the groove on "TIN CANS & TWINE," and quiet chords create a blank space on "ON NOBLE." Even the tempo is kept low, the snare and kick arrangements maintain tension, and brief phrases of vibraphone and synths outline the music. The band's design philosophy is clearly audible from the beginning, and the collective nature and precise rhythmic design from Chicago is clearly audible to today's ears. This is a must-hear album in the sense that it is the only album released while Bundy K. Brown, formerly of BASTRO~GASTR DEL SOL, was a member of the band.
