At a time when Hawaiians were reclaiming their language and most new music was written in Hawaiian, Teresa boldly reinterpreted the almost forgotten Hapa Haole style, or Hawaiian-themed songs in English that were played on American radio in the early 20th century. From her early work in the 1980s, Teresa has seen the genre as a serious art form, not just a nostalgic pastime, and has released such classics as "My Little Grass Shack" and "Sadie, The South Seas Lady," as well as her own hit "Sadie," which won the 1988 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best song of the year. She has also revived contemporary songs such as her hit "Uwehe, 'Ami, and Slide," which won the 1988 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Song of the Year. Her voice brings sophistication and sensuality to songs that were once considered outdated and breathes new life into them. Her vision came to fruition in 2008 with the album "Tropic Rhapsody". Co-produced with arranger Kit Ebersbach, the album combines the warmth of Hawaii with jazz and Latin rhythms.
