Description:
Las Robertas make a move away from the surf and garage influences of the past on 2026s All We Need Is Now, adding a third guitar player, and diving headfirst into dream pop. The Costa Rican band were very good at raucous garage rock and moody psychedelia, they also prove to be really adept at big, bouncy dream pop. They splice it with shoegaze, Brit-pop, Madchester, and indie rock, while still keeping a little bit of swirling psych in the mix. Not surprisingly with three of them in the band, the guitars are the star of the show. They are huge, taking turns jangling, chiming, crunching, and threatening to rip the speaker cones to shreds, but never overshadowing the wide-open melodies or the vocals. Mercedes Ollers lead vocals are the calm inside the storm and when she and keyboardist Daniela Garcia harmonize its like they are riding the crest of the wave of sound the guitars whip up. The best songs on the record are those that charge along breathlessly in a haze of strings, voices, and thundering drums; "Like a Flower" and the title track fit this bill, and they are thrilling dream pop thats happily retro and brand new at the same time. The tracks that cut the tempo while keeping the energy ramped up are nearly as good, especially the extremely lovely "Its Alright (Open Your Eyes)" which sounds like it could have been a minor alt rock radio hit in 1993 or at least provide some nicely evocative musical backing in a teen movie. The moody rocker "Chained Sadness" is another delight, with some snaking leads that are full of menace. One or two slow songs provide some contrast, and while they are less exciting, the contemplative feel of "Shifting to Happiness" and the yearning pain of "Garden" are certainly valid. One of the albums best songs combines the blown-out guitars of the uptempo tracks with the intimacy of the downtempo ones; "Everything I Wanted to Be" soars and shimmers, sounding massive in the same way that Metric does without sacrificing any of their realness. The similarly epic, album-ending "Live and Let Live" conjures up the feeling of the final song of a great live set. These tracks add up to pretty special album, and even the one moment thats a little dicey -- the super baggy dance groove pastiche "Running Free" -- gets a pass thanks to the amount of energy they put into its execution. All We Need Is Now is a blast of energy thats refreshing and gives one hope that rock & roll is alive and kicking if you look in the right place. ~ Tim Sendra
