Description:

Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh, the fiddle player of The Glooming, who made a name for himself with his collaboration with Thomas Bartlett on the cover featuring a photo of Saul Leiter, has released a new album with Sean Mac Erlaine, another native Irishman who is a master of woodwinds and electronic music. Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh, a fiddle player from Gloomington, has teamed up with Sean Mac Erlaine, a woodwind and electronic musician also from Ireland, to release a new album! Old Segotia" is the result of a 20-year collaboration between Mac Erlaine, whose musical language is rooted in jazz and acoustic experimentation, and O'Lailaigh, who has shaped and reconstructed traditional Irish music in his own unique way. From the opening, which seems to descend into the air, to the joyful murmurs of the latter half of the piece, their music is a deep fusion. Their music is deeply integrated and emotionally textured. The moving unison duet in "Cantandor," the lyrical rush of "Swallow Dive," and the uninhibited attempt to find the groove in "Reverse Burst" are a sometimes explosive, sometimes sighing, life-affirming, but always inquisitive interplay of sounds. Here is a joy of sound that sometimes explodes, sometimes sighs, sometimes finds life, but is always in search. The palette of instruments also illustrates the richness of the album. Mac Elrane plays clarinet, chalumeau d'amore, three different flutes, car hooter, percussion, live instruments, wurlitzer, synthesizer, vocals, and alto saxophone, while O'Laila adds his signature hardanger d'amore sound as well as flute and live instruments. He also plays flute and live instruments. On "Oiche Crua Sna Sleibhte," field-recorded birdcalls by ornithologist Sean Ronayne mysteriously emerge and reverberate. The two intersect with a variety of idioms, including folk, ambient, and experimental music, to create a time that only they can create together. Produced by Sean Mac Erlaine. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Sean Mac Erlaine in Studio Saile, Dublin, in 2025. The field recording on Oiche Crua Sna Sleibhte is by Sean Ronayne, recorded at Glenbower Wood, Co. Cork. Caoimhin O Raghallaigh photography Benedict Schlepper-Connolly design All compositions are by Sean Mac Erlaine and Caoimhin O Raghallaigh, and are copyright the composers. Pressed in Ireland by Anthem Vinyl. Produced with the support of the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaion.
