Circle X

Description:

Formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1978 from the local punk bands NO FUN and I-HOLES, CIRCLE X was a unique quartet that soon moved to New York and presented their own distinct post-punk/art punk. Before their recording debut in 1979, they embarked on an extended French tour led by manager Bernard Zekri. Traveling between Dijon in eastern France and Paris, they performed avant-garde shows. During this period, they were profoundly inspired by Arab records Zekri brought back from France, They fused the raw intensity of No Wave with avant-garde intellect, resonating with groups like DNA while steadfastly rejecting existing musical frameworks as a solitary collective. Forty-two years after the original release, their 1983 debut album finally sees an analog reissue. During the 1981 recording sessions, when sampling technology was not yet commonplace, the band "obsessed with building a system beyond standard definitions." They destructively constructed each track by creating loops using telephone mini-tapes and repeatedly layering noise dubs through amplifiers. The technique of amplifying distortion until "it became impossible to even discern what was happening in the original recording" resulted in an avant-garde, monstrous album that was also pioneering in its experimental music/DIY/junk aspects. "CURRENT," where hypnotic rhythm patterns—internalized influences from Arabic folk songs—dominate the space, "PREHISTORY PART I," where distortion from mini-tapes layers upon layers to deliver an unknown auditory experience, and "UNDERWORLD," where raw guitar and feral vocals morph into madness. These six tracks intertwine the remnants of dance music with primal impulses. Relentlessly repeating irregular clockwork and raw sonic manipulation shake the listener's subconscious. This unsettling, enigmatic album—once inexplicably timeless—is now reissued on vinyl for the first time by the esteemed label DRAG CITY. The dark logic, described by DAVID GRUBBS's BLUE CHOPSTICKS as "the sound of relentless inquiry" during the 2008 CD reissue, is once again etched into the grooves of vinyl. This astonishing album confronts us anew with the vivid breadth and profound depth inherent in the term "post-punk," delivered through a recording of staggering intensity.
