Description:
Pedal steel guitarist SUSAN ALCORN explored everything from the traditions of Texas Western Swing to free jazz and even the maqam of classical Arabic music. Sadly passing in January 2025, she pursued unknown sounds until her final years and is revered as a true explorer within the experimental music scene. This 2026 work features her collaboration with NOMAD WAR MACHINE, an improvised metal duo comprising Lebanese free jazz drummer JULIUS MASRI and free improvisational guitarist JAMES REICHARD. Having reached 70 and confronting her own mortality, she found herself captivated by the intense energy of death metal, leaving behind this shocking collaboration. Seven tracks in total, including "INVOCATION" where the pedal steel's flowing lines intertwine with roaring noise, "FACE OF UNKNOWN STARS" shifting from silence to fury, and the title track "CONTRA MADRE" blending Nordic death metal hooks with improvisation.Each artist's overwhelming freedom and signature style are evident, while all three uniformly express reverence for pre-70s country & western. These disparate elements collide fiercely, creating a new sonic space. A unique document that dissolves genre boundaries, where primal physicality and intricate musical dialogue coexist. This album stands as the most radical and most vibrant final chapter of her lifelong quest.
