Sersci: Orchestral Works, Volume 2 This collection features works by the Italian contemporary composer Giacinto Sersci from his early period (before 1950), middle period (the 1950s), and late period (the 1960s). The 32-minute epic “La Nascita del Verbo” is recorded here for the first time. Said to have been inspired by the mystical chords of the Russian composer Scriabin, this cantata makes extensive use of percussion and consists of a double fugue and 47 vocal canons employing the 12-tone technique. It is said that Šerši poured so much of his heart and soul into this work that he subsequently suffered from nervous exhaustion, to the point where he had to suspend his compositional activities for several years. Each of the four pieces in *Quattro Pezzi* uses only a single note, with variations created through micro-fractures. Amidst the near absence of chords, the listener’s attention is drawn to subtle changes in pitch and the orchestral timbre. With almost no chords present, the focus is on subtle changes in sound and the orchestral timbre. *Uaxuctum* (1966), for Ondes Martenot, seven percussionists, choir, and 23 instrumentalists, reflects the mythical and mystical characteristics of Mayan civilization.
