Strauss’s Heroes, as Portrayed by Noseda and the Zurich Opera Orchestra *Don Quixote* and *A Hero’s Life* are two large-scale symphonic poems composed by Richard Strauss in Munich and Berlin in the late 19th century. *Don Quixote* was inspired by the protagonist of Cervantes’ tragicomic novel, while *A Hero’s Life* portrays Strauss himself as a successful artistic hero. Similar “heroic figures” appear in the other two works included on this album. The early symphonic poem *Macbeth* depicts the protagonist of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Furthermore, the opera *Intermezzo* features a protagonist (nicknamed “Sturhi”) who leads a domestic life and is a projection of Strauss himself; this album includes four symphonic interludes from that work. Gianandrea Noseda, who has served as Music Director of the Zurich Opera Orchestra since the 2021–2022 season, has conducted these Strauss works, including those requiring a large orchestra.
