The second release from Philharmonia Records (philharmoniarec), the much-talked-about new label of the Philharmonia Zurich (Zurich Opera House Orchestra), is a collection of Wagner’s orchestral works conducted by Luigi. The Zurich Opera House and Wagner share a close connection. The Zurich Opera House’s predecessor, the Aktien Theater, served as a stage for Wagner, who had left Germany and gone into exile in Switzerland at the time. After that theater was destroyed by fire, the current Zurich Opera House was built in 1891. It is also a historic venue where Furtwängler began his career and where Wagner’s *Parsifal* was first performed outside of Bayreuth. Since this album was recorded over the course of careful studio sessions, Luigi’s precise and passionate conducting has paid off magnificently, resulting in a recording that maintains the excitement of a live performance while offering a more refined musicality. Luigi himself carefully curated the program, opening with the prelude to *Parsifal*, an opera deeply associated with the Zurich Opera House. This is followed by a series of masterpieces such as *Götterdämmerung*, *Die Walküre*, and *Tristan und Isolde*, and concludes with the overtures to Wagner’s first opera, *Die Feen*, and his second opera, *Die verbotene Liebe*—early works in which Berlioz’s influence is evident. Luigi skillfully draws out the orchestra’s unique undulating rhythms and rich resonance in Wagner’s works—which reach the pinnacle of mythic grandeur and musical sensuality—demonstrating his masterful compositional skill as an opera conductor.
