Description:
This album is a collection of medieval chants that were passed down in Swiss monasteries and cathedrals from the 13th to the 14th centuries. Drawing on sources preserved in St. Gallen, Lausanne, the Abbey of La Megrogue in Fribourg, and the Basel Song Manuscript, among others, the album traces a continuous musical lineage encompassing Gregorian chant, tropes, conductus, motets, and secular songs. Switzerland was not on the periphery of medieval European music; rather, it was a land that demonstrated its own unique reception and development of the genre while maintaining close ties with cultural centers such as Paris—and this fact is a major attraction of the entire program. The performing ensemble, Ensemble Résonance, is a new early music ensemble founded in 2020. Based on direct examination of manuscripts and musicological research, it aims to present living medieval music rather than a museum-style reenactment. The ensemble’s leader, Angélique Groiter, was born in Geneva and raised in Berlin; she is a multifaceted artist who, after studying dance, theater, and vocal music, went on to study medieval music at the Sorbonne. On this album as well, a rigorous interpretation of historical sources is combined with a free, theatrical sensibility, giving rise to a unified experience characterized by conversational singing, instrumental richness, and resonance with the surrounding space.
