Ortiz’s *Treatise on Variations*, published in Rome in 1553, is a music theory text that details methods of ornamentation and variation for the viola da gamba, complete with musical examples. A Japanese translation was released in 2010, and the book has garnered worldwide attention as a valuable resource for understanding Renaissance-era performance practices, which remain shrouded in mystery.
