Music and Essays on Peace!! The Quest for Peace Through Music!! The content of this new album stands apart from the annual series of book-style CDs released at the end of each year; in fact, the value of the music and the text is so equal that it might be more accurate to describe it as a book that comes with a CD. The music included consists of pieces related to peace, selected from Savall’s existing recordings. The essays, spanning over 1,000 pages, are written by three figures—philosopher Edgar Morin, sociologist Fatima Mernissi, and theologian Raymond Panikkar—all known for their work that transcends established academic boundaries. First, a few words about the three authors. Edgar Morin was born in Paris in 1921. He is a French philosopher and sociologist of Sephardic descent. He is known for the breadth of his interests—captured by the concept of “interdisciplinarity”—and for his thinking that transcends traditional academic boundaries. He is also famous as a New Wave film director for *Chronicle of a Summer* (1961), which he co-directed, and *The Time of Truth* (1965), for which he co-wrote the screenplay. His intellectual journey spans a wide range of topics, including communism, social anthropology, protests against the Algerian War, the sociology of popular culture, a series of writings on the May Revolution, and analyses of Soviet communism. Fatima Mernissi was born in Morocco in 1940. She is known worldwide as a sociologist who boldly pursues common values that bridge Islam and the West, moving beyond the “Clash of Civilizations” theory, and as a feminist writer who authored *Fatima, a Girl from the Harem*. Raymond Panikkar, who passed away in 2010, was born in Spain in 1918 to a Hindu Indian father who was raised in England and settled in Barcelona, and a Spanish-born Catholic mother. The cultural complexity of his background—having been raised as a Catholic in Spain—became the catalyst for him to later become a world-renowned authority as an advocate for interfaith dialogue and an expert in comparative religion. Furthermore, the cover features a work created shortly before his death by Antoni Tapies, a master of contemporary Spanish art who passed away this past February. Combining these texts with 23 musical excerpts—spanning five centuries, from Banshowa to Pärt—drawn from existing recordings, this album is, at its core, a testament to Savar’s service to the world as he seeks peace through the power of music.
