Savall’s passionate new recording is a concept album that broadly collects music from the Mediterranean (West) to the Middle East (East), spanning from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to Afghanistan in the east. It is a journey of cross-cultural exchange through music, traversing this vast region that was organically connected during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is particularly delightful that the album includes four pieces by Cantemir Ulu (the Turkish name of Moldavian Prince Dimitrie Cantemir), a composer who, though famous, has few recordings available. Thanks to the passionate performance by Esperion XXI, led by Savall, the music of the East and West—from a time when both culture and music preserved both their individuality and commonality—resonates deeply with our souls today.
