Although Fedoseyev has made numerous recordings, surprisingly, he had recorded almost none of Shostakovich’s works aside from Symphony No. 5. The Relief label has been compiling Fedoseyev’s live recordings of Shostakovich’s symphonies and has already released Nos. 1, 3, 7, 8, 10, and 13. Now, the long-awaited Symphony No. 4 is finally here. Composed in 1935–36, a period when Shostakovich’s opera *Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk* and the ballet *The Bright Stream* were facing fierce criticism, this work is known as one of the most provocative of all his symphonies. With a running time of over 60 minutes and requiring more than 130 instrumentalists—a Mahler-esque masterpiece—it often overwhelms the listener with astonishing sonic intensity. The music encompasses the full range of Shostakovich’s artistic persona—from tragic solemnity to lighthearted, almost playful passages—and many consider it his greatest masterpiece. Fedoseyev fully harnesses the capabilities of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (formerly the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra) to present a performance rooted in the Soviet interpretive tradition.
