In September 1964, at the height of the Cold War, La Scala of Milan staged a guest performance at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. La Scala approached this tour with meticulous preparation. The cast included singers such as Mirella Freni, Renata Scott, Leotyn Price, and Carlo Bergonzi, and Karajan also accompanied the troupe, demonstrating his presence as a cultural ambassador for the West. During this tour, Karajan conducted four performances of Puccini’s *La Bohème* and two performances of Verdi’s *Requiem*. This album features the performance of Verdi’s “Requiem” held on September 25, one of the two days (September 23 and 25) on which the work was performed. While the cast was nearly identical on both days, the bass role was sung by Nikolai Ghaurov on the 23rd and by Nicola Zaccharia on the 25th. Several other recordings from the 1964 Moscow performances have been released on CD, and as for Verdi’s “Requiem,” it appears that a recording of the September 23 performance was previously released as an unofficial recording. Ever since Karajan performed Verdi’s “Requiem” in 1935 at the age of 27 with the Aachen City Opera, where he was then music director, it remained a staple of his repertoire, which he performed time and again right up to his final concert with the Berlin Philharmonic at the 1989 Salzburg Easter Festival. This was a performance in which Karajan poured his heart and soul, and it makes perfect sense that he would include it in such an important concert designed to showcase the West’s cultural standing. The solo performance by American soprano Leontine Price is also breathtaking. Furthermore, this album was released in memory of the legendary tenor Carlo Bergonzi, who passed away on July 25, 2014, at the age of 90. Bergonzi performed with Karajan on numerous occasions, making this disc an ideal way to honor his memory. King International
