Re-Angéli Geneve, led by Stéphane MacLeod, records the John Passion, five different drafts of the second manuscript of 1725, with bonus tracks! Stéphane MacLeod and Re-Angéli Geneve, the internationally acclaimed recording company of Bach's major works of religious music such as "Matthew Passion" and "Mass in B minor," have recorded the "John Passion"! The "John Passion" was revised five times during Bach's lifetime, in 1724, 1725, 1732, 1739, and 1749, and has been performed at least four of those times. Each time it was performed again, the score was reworked and rewritten. Today, the 1749 manuscript, which was the last to be performed, is often used in performances and recordings, and McLeod uses the fourth manuscript as the basis for his recording, but it seems that he also referred to other manuscripts when selecting the composition, instrumentation, and lyrics. For example, the harpsichord and organ are used together for the bass passages, and they are well used and skillfully varied depending on the piece and the scene. Also included in this recording are five bonus tracks* that were replaced in the second draft of 1725. By switching the tracks, it is possible to listen to the entire composition as it was in the second draft of 1725. The tension in the singing is extraordinary right from the beginning, and the chorus power of "Crucify me" and other choruses is also impressive. Led by Werner Gura, one of the greatest evangelists of our time, this is a performance of the highest level of perfection, no less than the previous "Matthew Passion" and "Mass in B minor". The solo singing by the singers is excellent, but the chorale is also worthy of special mention. The articulation of the singers and instrumentalists is unified, and both singers and instrumentalists sing as one, as if they were chewing on the text.
