A notable release featuring two great instruments Esther Hoppe's cool, luminous Bach: the complete works for solo violin The distinguished Swiss violinist Esther Hoppe, who has released many discs on the claves label, presents a complete recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. Hoppe was born in Switzerland in 1978 and studied in Basel, Philadelphia, London and Zurich. She took first prize at the Mozart International Competition in Salzburg in 2002 and first prize at the ARD International Competition in Munich. She has appeared with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Les Siecles, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and her chamber music partners have included Ronald Brautigam, Christian Poltera, Francesco Piemontesi, Clemens Hagen, Heinz Holliger and Elisabeth Leonskaja. She resolved to record the solo works during the days of the pandemic, drawing on historically informed technique and bringing her experience of the baroque violin fully to bear. "I am convinced that a manner of playing grounded in historical knowledge can be combined with the strengths of the modern instrument," Hoppe says. The use of two great instruments is another point of interest. The original plan was to record everything on Hoppe's own Goffredo Cappa violin of 1690, but during the recording period she was loaned the 1722 Antonio Stradivari known as the "de Ahna", on which she plays the two works in major keys. The instrument takes its name from Heinrich Karl Hermann de Ahna (1835-1892), violinist of the Joachim Quartet; it has been heard in public only rarely over the past forty years, so this release amounts to the "de Ahna's" CD debut.
