Li Angeli Genève, founded in 2005 by the accomplished bass singer Stephen McLeod—who is also known for his guest appearances with the Bach Collegium Japan—has recorded the St. Matthew Passion. This performance was recorded over four days beginning on April 22, 2019, at the Ernest Ansermet Studio in Geneva, following a series of five concerts held during Lent in April of that year. Les Anges de Genève is renowned as a leading early music ensemble. A hallmark of this ensemble—which performs with a flexible lineup using period instruments—is the placement of vocalists in the front row on stage, regardless of the repertoire. This is intended to fully highlight the power of the lyrics in the vocal parts and the richness of the ensemble sound. The ensemble has earned high acclaim for its repertoire, which centers on the works of Bach. This long-awaited recording of the St. Matthew Passion features a stellar lineup of singers, including Werner Gyula as the Evangelist and Benoît Arnaud as Jesus. McCloud tackled this monumental work with the dense ensemble and rich expression he has honed over the years.
