This highly anticipated new 2018 recording, marking his debut on the Claves label, features Shostakovich’s two Piano Trios and his Violin Sonata. Shostakovich’s only Violin Sonata was dedicated to David Oistrakh on his 60th birthday. It is a masterpiece from a period when his late-career style became more concise, and he pursued the profound tragedy of life and philosophical depth of thought. This work, which matches the artistry of its dedicatee, Oistrakh, in both its grand scale and spiritual depth, is also known as one of the most technically demanding pieces ever composed. The young maestro Gringolts delivers a soulful and passionate performance of this work, along with two piano trios. Ilya Gringolts rose to international fame at the age of just 16 when he won the Paganini International Violin Competition. He subsequently made his CD debut (BIS999) with Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1, attracting widespread attention.
