Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of His Birth. The highly anticipated Françoise-Green Piano Duo takes on works by Kurtág! From the “Debut” series on the Swiss label Claves. This highly anticipated new release features the promising Françoise-Green Piano Duo, presenting works by Kurtág—who turned 90 in 2016—along with Bach arrangements by Kurtág and Schubert’s pieces for four hands on one piano. Kurtág, one of Hungary’s leading composers, studied in Budapest before studying under Milhaud and Messiaen in Paris. He absorbed the avant-garde music of the 1960s and played a key role in the development of Webern’s serial technique. He began composing *Játékok (Játékok)* for piano in 1973; the collection currently spans eight volumes and comprises over 300 short pieces. These works, which incorporate special playing techniques such as using the palms and elbows, are considered among Kurtág’s masterpieces. This recording features excerpts from Volumes 4 and 8. While composing original works employing a variety of techniques, Kurtág also arranged chorales—primarily from Bach’s organ suites—for piano four-hands. Kurtág’s four-hand arrangements do not merely add depth to the sound; they pursue sonic effects that take full advantage of the wide dynamic range achievable only by a piano duo. Since the structure is not simply “Primo = melody, Secondo = basso continuo,” the pieces require precise ensemble playing. Formed in 2008, the Françoise-Green Piano Duo is currently one of the most talked-about piano duos, having won first prize at various competitions across Europe (Switzerland in 2011, the United Kingdom in 2013, and the Czech Republic in 2015).
