Description:
From relics of early music to a “living medium” that creates contemporary sounds! The “transformation” of the harpsichord, crafted by virtuoso Luca Quintavalle in collaboration with cutting-edge composers. An album of “contemporary music” suddenly released by GlauxRecords, a label focused on historical approaches. Yet the underlying theme remains consistent. With “Metamorphosis” as the keyword, the album embodies an ambitious concept: to liberate the harpsichord—a legacy of the past—from fixed historical frameworks and revive it in the present as a constantly evolving, living entity. The album features works by composers with vastly different aesthetics, ranging from masters such as Wolfgang Rihm and Hans Abrahamsen to up-and-coming young talents like Mikel Urkisa and Benjamin Atayal. Many of these works were composed specifically for Quintavalle or arranged for the harpsichord. The album also showcases a strong commitment to the instruments used, featuring an extended double-manual harpsichord built by Andrea Restelli in 2018, based on a model by Christian Fater (built in 1738) housed in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The final track, Régis Campo’s “Pagamania!,” is a piece brimming with humor and frenzy (mania) that relentlessly repeats Paganini’s famous phrase, known to all. In this new version, the harpsichord takes center stage. In addition to the same instruments featured in Theo Urd’s version—such as the toy piano, duduk, and oud—it incorporates beatboxing and trumpet, which were absent from Urd’s version, as well as chaotic sound elements such as a “cuckoo whistle,” “toy rooster,” and “Polish water whistle.” With a diverse array of elements intertwining, this delightful piece unfolds a kaleidoscopic portrayal of Paganini’s frenzy. Luca Quintavalle A virtuoso who, unbound by the constraints of historical keyboard instruments, pioneers new possibilities for the harpsichord at the forefront of contemporary music. Through close collaboration with composers of various generations, he continues to present the harpsichord as a “living medium of invention” through new works and arrangements written specifically for him.
