When people refer to Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony,” they usually mean the famous piece in B minor; however, there are actually about four other works with that title. This piece—which, according to the old numbering system, would be No. 7—is also unfinished, and all that remains of it are mostly single-melody sketches. Several people have attempted to orchestrate it, but the most famous version is that by Weingartner. The excellence of this arrangement by Weingartner—who was also known as a composer—has long been recognized, and it clearly demonstrates the deep respect he held for Schubert.
