Description:
A collection of works by the Swiss-Russian composer Paul Juon (1872–1940). Juon studied at conservatories in Germany and Russia and composed significant works that incorporated the best elements of both countries’ music. The “Rhapsodic Symphony,” which begins with a Russian-style fanfare, is a major work composed between 1937 and 1938; it is considered a grand composition that reflects his own life. The other piece, the “Capricious Symphony,” was composed in the summer of 1939 and is Yuon’s final orchestral work. Although colored by complex rhythms and harmonies, it features a simple style with a classical three-movement form and possesses an atmosphere that is the opposite of the aforementioned “Rhapsodic Symphony.” The performance is by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Graham Jenkins.
