Among Lehár’s (1870–1948) many operettas, *Where the Lark Sings* is relatively little known. While the march, “Palotás,” and a few other pieces are occasionally performed as a medley, the reality is that there are almost no opportunities to enjoy the complete work. However, Puccini, who saw this operetta in 1919, was so moved by its brilliance that he immediately wrote a letter of praise to Lehár (they had met six years earlier)—a testament to how deeply this work moved people. Even though the plot depicts a common love triangle, the beauty of the melodies and the heroine’s magnificent arias, which make full use of coloratura, exude such a strong charm that it would be a shame to let this work fall into obscurity. This live recording from the Lehár Festival held in Bad Ischl will surely be a delightful gift for many fans of the Viennese waltz. Naxos Japan Co., Ltd.
