Millecker: *Gaspalone* (2 CDs) The story unfolds in Palermo, Sicily, in the 1920s. Mayor Nazoni, who has set his sights on the wealthy widow Carlotta, introduces his own son to her. Of course, Carlotta sees right through his scheme to get his hands on her fortune. Then a stranger appears. He confesses that he is being hunted as “Gasparone, the Great Bandit.” They hatch a plan to make it look as though Gasparone himself had stolen Carlotta’s fortune. Now penniless (or so it seemed), Carlotta’s marriage plans with Mayor Nazoni are naturally called off. However, it turns out that the stranger is actually a high-ranking count, and no bandit named “Gaspalone” ever existed. The story ends with Carlotta and the count happily tying the knot. Although it features the common trope of a “miser targeting a widow’s fortune,” it is a delightful and beautiful work, expertly crafted and filled with enchanting melodies. The story—in which people’s emotions intertwine over a thief they’ve never even seen, only for the scheming to ultimately be exposed—must have thrilled audiences of the time. This performance is imbued with a quintessentially Viennese atmosphere, brimming with lightness and joy.
