Description:
This “Hungarian Rhapsody,” widely regarded as one of Liszt’s (1811–1886) masterpieces, was originally written for solo piano. As usual, the music—which made full use of virtuosic techniques and incorporated a wealth of traditional Hungarian folk songs (or at least what Liszt believed to be such)—certainly captured the hearts of the audience. Composer Franz Doppler was among those captivated by the piece; he arranged several of these pieces for orchestra (the numbers do not necessarily correspond to the original works), transforming them into even more brilliant music. This recording was made as part of a project commemorating the 200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth in 2011 as part of a series titled “Hazelbeck conducts a 19th-century period instrument orchestra in a seven-part performance of Liszt’s complete orchestral works”; this format was also used for the premiere in Weimar.
