Description:
Wilhelm Georg Berger (1929–1993) was a composer born in Romania. He studied viola and music history at the Bucharest Conservatory and performed as a violist with the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1968 to 1989, he served as secretary of the Romanian Composers’ Union. In 1991, he was appointed associate professor at the Bucharest Conservatory. At the same time, he appeared on numerous radio and television programs, performed in concerts and gave lectures, and even wrote essays and works on art history, demonstrating his wide-ranging talents. As a composer, he has built a unique musical world characterized by music based on numerical calculations—sometimes employing the Fibonacci sequence—that avoids lyrical sentimentality and bears a resemblance to Hindemith’s Expressionism. In addition to 24 symphonies, he left behind approximately 50 orchestral works, including a viola concerto. Hearing the Viola Concerto performed by the masterful Menke-Mayer, with his rich, deep tone, delivers a piercing sensation that resonates deep within the listener’s sensibilities. Naxos Japan
