The CPO label’s intensive efforts to revive the works of Herzogenberg are progressing steadily. This release features a collection of his choral works. Herzogberg, who had been active as a pianist in his youth, composed primarily chamber music; however, under the influence of his close friend, the musicologist Philipp Spitta, he gradually began to turn his attention to choral works as well. Spitta offered him various pieces of advice and introduced him to many texts (Philipp’s younger brother, Friedrich, also provided Herzogenberg with a libretto for an oratorio). In Herzogenberg’s choral works, however, he does not sing the poetry in a loud, boisterous manner. His music is always thoughtful and introspective. Yet, a torrential, seething passion must have dwelled within Herzogberg’s heart. The outbursts of fervent emotion that occasionally spill forth convey a sense of astonishing originality. Naxos Japan
