German composer Lortzing (1801-1851) is known today only for "The Russian Emperor and the Shipbuilder" or "Undine," and his other works are rarely performed. However, he was a leading figure of the early Romantic period, immensely popular at the time, and his works were so highly regarded that they even influenced Wagner. This "Regina" is a very unusual work, and it is also a problematic work about politics and workers. Lortzing himself was neither a politician nor a propagandist, but the script, written by the composer himself, is a brilliant one that captures human nature well. It is a powerful work with a profound plot that looks deeply into the society of the time, with a comic flavor. Naxos Japan
