Description:
C.P.E. Bach, Bach’s second son, served King Frederick as a member of the Berlin court orchestra in his twenties and composed numerous works for keyboard instruments. However, in 1768, he succeeded Telemann as court Kapellmeister in Hamburg, where he composed a vast number of sacred works. This album features four works written for five major churches in Hamburg. Unlike conventional cantatas, these were composed for specific church occasions and were performed simultaneously at all five churches on the designated Sunday. Each piece features a splendid sound, including three trumpets, timpani, and organ; however, there is a great deal of musical material reused—some from his own works and some from those of his father, Bach—and I think it’s quite interesting to try to identify these references.
