This fascinating two-disc set explores the “compositional side” of the legendary pianist Arthur Schnabel (1882–1951). Recognized as a “child prodigy” from an early age and praised by Brahms as “the most formidable genius of the future,” Schnabel is also known for his unconventional career path: he first gained acclaim as a chamber music pianist and later became recognized as a Beethoven specialist. While he rarely performed avant-garde works, his compositions were at the cutting edge of their time, featuring a progressive and unique style that even surpassed the works of his contemporary Schoenberg. The pieces featured here are performed with astonishing precision. Furthermore, his art songs were written for his wife, Therese Behr, and feature deeply meaningful music tailored to her voice as an alto singer. Naxos Japan
