Born near Hamburg, Hasse made his debut as a composer in 1723 with the opera *Antigonos*. He then traveled to Italy, where he developed a close friendship with Alessandro Scarlatti. Gradually gaining fame, by the 1730s he was highly regarded as a composer on par with Handel and wrote as many as 120 operas; however, his style was not accepted by 18th-century audiences, and he was eventually forgotten by history. Today, he is known as a master of sacred music. His numerous works written for church services—particularly the “Te Deum” composed in 1751—were performed throughout Central Europe and came to be known as the “Dresden Te Deum.” Please take a moment to listen to this and other devout and sacred works.
