Description:
Historically, as a member of the Hanseatic League, Hamburg was one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities, and was granted the privilege of a free city by the Holy Roman Emperor three times in 1410, 1510, and 1618. Hamburg was a relatively safe and peaceful city among the medium-sized cities of the time. However, it was also constantly exposed to external enemies, such as the Danes (the predecessors of Denmark), who had been feuding with the city since the Middle Ages, and pirates who attacked from the sea. The citizens of Hamburg formed their own neighborhood watch and made every effort to protect themselves from foreign enemies. The captain of such a vigilante group was respected by the citizens, and a feast was held to reward him for his hard work. This is a collection of works that Telemann wrote in 1738 for such occasions. Naxos Japan
