Richard Eilenberg: Collection of Waltzes, Polkas, and Marches Even if you’re not familiar with Eilenberg’s name, anyone who hears the charming melody of “The Watermill in the Forest”—a tune often found in collections of famous pieces—will undoubtedly clap their hands and say, “Oh, that’s that song!” Born in 1848, he composed his first work, the “Concert Overture,” at the age of 18. After serving in the military, he served as music director in Stettin for 16 years. From 1889 onward, as a freelance composer, he published over 300 works—including dance pieces, marches, and wind ensemble pieces—and gained widespread popularity. Today, only the aforementioned “The Forest Watermill (The Black Forest Watermill)” and “A Sled Ride in St. Petersburg” remain in the concert repertoire, but they are all charming pieces that make one think they deserve to be enjoyed much more widely.
