Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist who lost his right arm in World War I. He is known for leveraging his considerable wealth and fame to commission “works for the left hand” from renowned composers of the time. R. Strauss, Britten, Hindemith, Korngold, and others composed pieces at his request, but Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto for the Left Hand” is particularly famous among them. The two pieces included on this album were also written for the same purpose, but perhaps because their style was too avant-garde for its time, they have, unfortunately, been all but forgotten. The performer here is the veteran pianist Becker. A pianist with a wide-ranging repertoire from Bach to Liem, he succeeds in expressing these difficult works with rich nuance using only his left hand. Oue’s conducting is also a highlight.
