She remained unmarried for the rest of her life, and it is said that Goethe regretted abandoning her for the rest of his life as well. This opera, which embellishes Frederike’s tragic love story—in which some say the character of Gretchen in *Faust* bears her likeness—with elegant melodies, Amid the laughter, it conceals a heart-wrenching sadness.
