Boccherini is best known for his charming “Minuet.” However, he actually composed so many works that even the most devoted Boccherini enthusiasts cannot possibly know the full scope of his oeuvre. While CPO has released many of his works—including a box set of 28 symphonies—this is still not enough to grasp the full picture. This release features an enticing program: two cello concertos—which truly showcase his strengths—along with Symphony No. G521, which was not included in the box set, and an octet. This is a fascinating recording that allows listeners to fully savor Boccherini’s unique melodic lines. Given that he was himself a highly skilled cellist, his treatment of the cello in his cello concertos never ceases to amaze, no matter how many times one listens to them.
