The position of the next music director of the Berlin Philharmonic—which had been the subject of prolonged controversy—was ultimately awarded to the Russian prodigy Kirill Petrenko (as of 2015). While some had, of course, predicted this decision, there is no doubt that it came as a surprise to most people. After all, this conductor had made very few recordings, and little was known about the nature of his performances. Fortunately, cpo has released three recordings of orchestral works by Josef Suk (1874–1935), a project he had been working on since his time as General Music Director of the Berlin Komische Oper. This time, we’ve compiled the complete recordings—including a reissue of the symphony “Asrael,” which had been out of print for a long time—into a box set.
