This is a collection of guitar works by two leading composers from Finland and Japan, who are roughly the same age. Kikimo Hakora’s “Guitar Concerto” is a bold piece of music that evokes a Spanish-style tradition. It invites listeners to imagine the era of medieval Andalusia, when Arabs, Jews, Gypsies, and Christians all lived together in peace, while also carrying the grand significance of exploring the origins of Jewish music. On the other hand, as you know, Hosokawa’s works possess a modern, urban atmosphere; they seek to fuse the sounds of Japanese and Western instruments while also delving into the inner workings of the world. Hosokawa, whose father was a master of ikebana, has been creating works related to flowers in recent years, and these two pieces are also closely connected to flowers. “Blooming” goes without saying, but “Journey IX—Awakening” is the ninth installment in the “Journey” series, in which the guitar is conceived as a “lotus flower that, though rooted deep in the mud, blooms toward the sky.” “The blooming of a flower represents one’s own rebirth.” Herein lies the essence of the composer’s philosophy.
