This is a magnificent concept album by Virpi Raisanen, a promising young Finnish mezzo-soprano. She began her career as an accomplished violinist but recently transitioned to opera singing. She has already performed at venues such as the Berlin State Opera, the Royal Concertgebouw, the Dutch National Opera, and the Salzburg Festival, where she has been widely acclaimed for her ability to master a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque works to contemporary pieces by composers such as Nono and Reim. Titled “Mahler’s Legacy,” this album features works by composers who carried forward the “fusion of folk songs, simplicity, and late Romanticism,” and illustrates the evolution of the “German Lied” as it shifted from popular songs to deeply personal ones. The piano accompaniment is provided by Vitasalo, known for his renowned performances with Isokoski.
