Description:
Violinist Christian Tetzlaff, who is very active as a soloist and chamber musician, is now available on the ONDINE label. His recordings of Bach's unaccompanied sonatas, Beethoven's concertos, and Sibelius are highly acclaimed worldwide, and he has also made frequent visits to Japan, each time wowing a capacity audience. In this recording, he shows off all of his virtuosity. Mendelssohn's concertos are recognized as masterpieces that need no introduction, and there have been many great performances in the past and present, but this Tetzlaff gives a performance that is truly breathtaking. The tempo is generally set early, which may be due to conductor Järvi's interpretation, but Tetzlaff's superb technique easily handles this tempo with the utmost exquisiteness. Since this is a live recording, it would be impossible to suppress the excitement that accelerates in both the first and the last movements. Schumann's concerto is generally refreshingly light in flavor, and may not be enough for those who are looking for a "quiet emotion" in this piece, but I believe that the virtuoso nature that Schumann must have sought is perfectly expressed here.The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra's plump sound abounds throughout this remarkable disc, which offers plenty to listen to.
