Description:
In 1957, Rautavaara (1928–), who was studying the twelve-tone technique at the time, met a Hungarian exile. After hearing firsthand accounts of the Hungarian Uprising from him, Rautavaara used those stories as the basis for this opera, *Kaivos* (meaning “mine”), incorporating elements of his own country’s political situation. However, Finland at the time was under intense pressure from the former Soviet Union, making it impossible to stage such a controversial work. Although several revisions were made, it was never actually staged and was on the verge of being forgotten… but just before that happened, this performance finally took place in 2010. In the late 1950s, miners working in a mine attempt a rebellion under the leadership of Simon, a former terrorist. However, Simon had already lost his charisma. The workers barricade themselves inside, while a political commissar attempts to persuade them. Meanwhile, Simon and his lover, Ira, are torn. The music maintains a consistently atonal, cold tone, underscoring the tension-filled plot. Although quite complex, it is a story with a clear, coherent narrative. Naxos Japan
