Even though it’s billed as “Choral Music for Children,” given that it’s by Rautavaara (1928–), one of today’s most mystical composers, there’s no doubt you’ll hear some incredibly fascinating music. It’s full of energy right from the very first piece, “Marjatta.” Based on the Nordic epic “Kalevala,” Rautavaara himself adapted the text and crafted it into a one-act mystical drama. While a previous recording featuring Rautavaara’s own recitation was released on the BIS label, this performance has far more depth and is rendered with a much more striking richness. Furthermore, “The Carpenter’s Son,” as the title suggests, celebrates the joy of Jesus’ birth. The suite based on Lorca’s poetry is a relatively well-known work. The Tapio Choir masterfully performs all the other pieces as well—each based on folk songs but requiring modern harmonies and a crystalline sound. ■ Tapio Choir A children’s choir renowned worldwide for its popularity and talent. It was founded in 1963 by Erikki Pohjola, an elementary school music teacher from one of Finland’s most distinguished musical families (the following year, Kodály and Orff visited to provide guidance). Its members are talented children aged 9 to 18 from all over Finland. With a wide-ranging repertoire spanning folk songs, contemporary works, and jazz, their voices are beloved around the world.
