If you tell me where the thief is, I’ll pay you 20 sesterces.” “Profit is happiness.” “Thieves are outside; good people are inside.” “Man, I’m lucky.” “About twice here.” Magnus Lindberg’s “Graffiti” is a work for chorus and orchestra with a running time of over 30 minutes, featuring 63 pieces of “graffiti” found at the ruins of Pompeii as its text. The music, reminiscent of Stravinsky, Britten, and Orff, evokes life in ancient Rome. Composed as a joint commission by the Oslo Philharmonic—with funding from the Southbank Centre in London, Finnish Broadcasting Company, and the Norwegian Music Council—it received the 2009 Finnish Composers’ Association Award. “Behold the Sun” was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony. It is a three-movement orchestral work whose title derives from the opening chorus of Schoenberg’s “Gurre-Lieder.” It premiered in Berlin under the baton of Simon Rattle.
