Ismo Eskelinen (1971–) was born in Kuopio. He studied under Timo Korhonen and Oskar Girya, and after winning various competitions, including the Scandinavian Guitar Competition, he has been active as a soloist and chamber musician. Niccolò Paganini gained popularity as a violin virtuoso. He was a master not only as a violinist but also as a guitarist, and is said to have composed over 200 pieces for the guitar. He also wrote many duets for guitar and violin, which, along with works by Giuliani and others, form a valuable repertoire for guitarists and violinists. For Pekka Kousisto and Eskelinen, who perform chamber music together, Paganini’s works are an indispensable part of their concert programs, and their live performances of Paganini are always met with acclaim. Two years ago, the British newspaper *The Guardian* (January 16, 2007) described the Paganini performance the duo gave as “unconditionally captivating” and went so far as to praise it as “perhaps the finest event to have occurred in classical music in recent years.” Completely different from the “overemphasis on technique” often associated with the “virtuoso” Paganini, their music—brimming with joy—possesses a classical charm reminiscent of the early works of Haydn or Beethoven.
