Kousist / Sibelius Collection (SACD) Pekka Kousist (1976–) recorded Sibelius’s Violin Concerto when he was 19 years old. This recording (ODE878) by the young Finnish musician—who was the first to win first prize at the Sibelius Violin Competition—became a bestseller in Finland alone, selling over 20,000 copies in a single year. Ten years have passed since then. While continuing his concert and recording activities, he has also participated in folk music and jazz sessions. He serves as music director alongside his brother, Jaakko, at the chamber music festival held in Järvenpää, the “town of Sibelius,” and is steadily advancing his career as an artist. Following the concerto, he performs a collection of works for violin and orchestra: “Humoresque,” “Serenade,” and the “Suite,” which became his final work to bear an opus number. Pekka feels the emotions that Sibelius entrusted to these short pieces at a very deep level. He conducted the *Snow White* suite, written for a play by Strindberg. Yet he remains unconcerned, saying, “I’m just playing the violin with everyone else in front of the orchestra.” Along with the collection of Sibelius’s works for violin and piano (ODE1046), recorded at Sibelius’s home “Ainola,” this album showcases Pekka Kousist’s recent musical work.
