This is an opera by Rautavaara (1928–) depicting Alexis Kivi (1834–1872), the founder of Finnish-language literature known for *The Seven Brothers*. Rautavaara wrote the libretto himself, drawing on Kivi’s own poems and texts. Amid a struggle against misunderstanding and his detractors, Kivi—a literary figure who produced numerous magnificent works—suffered from mental illness and died at the young age of 38. The story centers on Arkvist, who harshly condemned him, and Charlotte, his confidante and lover. The first half features a young Kivi brimming with hope, while the second half depicts the cornered Kivi in his final years (portrayed by two different singers). The compelling performance by the renowned singer Hyünninen, who portrays Kivi in his later years as he gradually descends into mental illness, is utterly captivating. In contrast, Arqvist, who condemns Kivi, is not even given the opportunity to sing. It is a deeply thought-provoking work. Hynninen is an indispensable figure in Lauttavaara’s works (this piece was also commissioned by him); he premiered the work and recorded it in 2002 (ODE-1000), but here his voice has gained even greater depth.
