Performed by the Caris Ensemble, a group of virtuoso musicians led by Rainer Sonne, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Beethoven’s “Jena Symphony”—long considered one of his masterpieces—but actually composed by Witt, and the Biedermeier-era masterpiece set of septets by the great Kreutzer Born in Freiburg in 1780, Kreutzer served as court Kapellmeister in the Kingdom of Württemberg in Stuttgart and the Principality of Fürstenberg in Donaueschingen, and later became Kapellmeister at the Kärntnertor Theater in Vienna, achieving success both musically and socially. According to the scholar Gustav Schilling, his musical style was highly regarded by his contemporaries as “a combination of Italian melodic beauty, French elegance, and German vigor.” This album features a combination of Kreutzer’s Septet—considered his greatest masterpiece in chamber music—and works by Witt (born in 1770 in southern Germany), who was the same age as Beethoven. Witt is renowned as the true composer of the Jena Symphony—a work once firmly believed to be by Beethoven (Franz Konwitschny also recorded it, and it was released by Deutsche Grammophon and Eterna as Beethoven’s Jena Symphony). In fact, the Jena Symphony is a hidden masterpiece that, upon listening, sounds very much like a work by Beethoven.
